Ever since he launched the New York-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF) in 2005, Thor Halvorssen has been making huge waves. The 39-year-old Halvorssen is president of the foundation and the driving force behind its success. He is the descendent of numerous heads of state which, undoubtedly, is the reason behind his strong leadership skills.
The reason behind his involvement in human rights and the inspiration for the foundation has to do with the life that Thor was born into. His knowledge on the subject comes from his personal history, rather than just text books which, is perhaps why he has been so effective in his work. According to an article by The Weekly Standard, “After exposing government corruption while working as Venezuela’s drug czar, his father was tortured in a Caracas prison. His mother was shot in an anti-Hugo Chávez demonstration. His first cousin Leopoldo López—a perpetual challenger of the Chavista regime that failed to die with its namesake—is currently gutting it out as a political prisoner in a Venezuelan jail”. Having experienced such deep personal connections to human suffering and pain, Thor is uniquely qualified to make a real difference in the fight for human rights.
Despite constantly being beaten down and criticized for him work, Thor always remains positive in his journey to lead others in the fight for human rights. He believes in making bold moves and statements to draw as much attention to the cause as possible. He has even developed himself into a film producer so that he is further able to spread the knowledge and information about violations to human rights that are being made worldwide. Taking his work even further, Thor has published two books on the subject matter, hoping to bring awareness to the topic on yet another platform.
